Guided Hike Ventures

All of TAG’s hike ventures start at your accommodation in Yungaburra village where you will be met by your guide and transported to the trailhead. All guests will receive a comprehensive briefing on our route and safety.

Recommended gear comprises sturdy walking boots, hat, long sleeve shirt and walking pants, long or short depending on season, sunscreen and at least 2.5 litres of water – a Camelbak type bag is suggested to carry water and all gear. Optional gear includes sunglasses, walking poles and light swimmers and we suggest that wildlife enthusiasts bring binoculars and a camera, preferably in a waterproof bag. Your guide will be carrying a First Aid kit and Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB).

Hiking Mt. Baldy and Widow Maker combo – Three Quarter Day

This is a steady climb through open eucalypt forest to the 1,017m summit of Mt. Baldy which offers lovely views of the Tablelands. We have the option of a cross country hike to The Widow Maker, an adjoining peak, or the longer option of following the track down Mt. Baldy and back up the to the summit of The Widow Maker. Here we enjoy an early picnic lunch while we take in the stunning views before making our way back to the trailhead. We now have the option to transfer to Hasties Swamp, a large seasonal wetland renowned for its diverse bird population or the Atherton Bat Hospital for a guided tour and afternoon tea before returning to Yungaburra.

Grade – moderate to difficult.

Hiking Mt. Bartle Frere Summit via western route – Full Day

This iconic full day hike requires an early start when we transfer to Gourka Road in the Wooroonooran National Park about 25 km from Yungaburra. The hike involves a steep, arduous climb through beautiful rainforest with stops for smoko and snacks along the way. We stop for a light packed lunch and rest adjacent to the headwaters of the Russell River. The final ascent is over irregular boulders and the summit at 1,622m is the highest point in Queensland. During the dry season the summit offers superb mountain and coastal views. The return trip is via the same path.
Track surface – unformed track.
Grade – strenuous, for experienced hikers only.

Hiking Lamb Range and Kahlpahlim Rock Trail – Full Day

We have an early start and transfer to Davies Creek National Park about an hour from Yungaburra. The hike starts at about 750m and we pass through open eucalypt forest on well worn ‘snig’ tracks used for timber hauling in the past. The climb reaches about 1,290m at the Kahlpahlim Rock summit which offers excellent views of Lake Morris, Cairns and the Coral Sea. We enjoy smoko at the summit before returning via an alternative track which passes through rainforest before crossing a cool creek where we enjoy a quick swim. We make the short drive back to Davies Creek for a light meal and swim before returning to Yungaburra.

Grade  – moderate to quite strenuous.

Hiking Combination of either Windin and Caribou Falls or West Mulgrave and Churname Falls – Three Quarter Day

Both of these combinations start in the Wooroonooran National Park about 20 km to the south east of Yungaburra. The Windin and Caribou Falls hike involve relatively easy walking on the partly formed Old Cairns Track through mixed forest. The views from the top of Windin Falls are among the most spectacular on the Tablelands and we enjoy a light lunch and swim before visiting Caribou Falls and heading back up the track and returning to Yungaburra. The West Mulgrave and Churname Falls combination is a more arduous walk, essentially through untracked rainforest with a steep downhill track leading to the spectacular West Mulgrave falls which cascade off the western face of Mount Bartle Frere. We enjoy a light lunch and swim at the base of these falls before visiting Churname Falls and hiking up the hill to the Gourka Road takeout and returning to Yungaburra.

Grade – moderate to quite strenuous respectively.

Hiking Half day Ventures

TAG also offers numerous light ½ day introductory walks of between 2 and 4 hours including the Peterson Creek Track in Yungaburra, Bull Creek Track in Gadgarra Forest area and the beautiful Crater Lakes Eacham and Barrine which allow for safe swimming .
