Challenging, supported 3 or 4 day treks around, up and over the highest mountain of Qld. – for experienced hikers only
4 DAY TRIP ITINERARY:
DAY 1 – Old Cairns Track to Mulgrave River Camp
An early start allows us to transfer to the Old Cairns Track adjacent to Wooroonooran National Park about 25km from Yungaburra. We leave our transfer and enjoy a steady hike on the partly formed track through mixed forest with a stop over at the magnificent Windin Falls, time permitting. The hike then involves an arduous downhill walk along a narrow She Oak ridge. We now have 2 route options to get to our overnight camp; the longer option takes us west to the beautiful West Butcher Creek which we track to its confluence with the mighty Mulgrave River and the shorter option tracks east onto the Goldfield Track just upstream of Kearney’s Flat campground where we enjoy a well deserved prepared dinner and sleep. Total distance for the day is about 18km.
DAY 2 – Mulgrave River Camp to The Boulders
We have a wake up call for breakfast and a swim before heading off along the Goldfield Track which leads to tonight’s camp at the Boulders National Park via Babinda. Today is an pleasant walk over about 19km, initially along the beautiful Mulgrave River. We stop for tea and a swim at the causeway before pressing on into pristine rainforest with the chance of sighting a variety of birds and mammals. We have lunch in the foothills of the Bellenden Ker range before crossing a saddle and dropping down onto flats adjacent to North Babinda Creek. Our camp for the night is at a small campground at the Boulders which has beautiful swimming holes lined with huge granite boulders. A meal and tent plus your personal gear await you.
DAY 3 – The Boulders to Mt. Bartle Frere Eastern Summit Camp
We transfer to the spectacular Josephine Falls which is also the start of the eastern ascent of Mt. Bartle Frere where our support group leaves us for the next 2 days. Day 3 requires a steady climb of about 1,300m over about 7.5km to the eastern summit camp where we set up our tents and take in the magnificent views to the Coral Sea and surrounding countryside before preparing the evening meal.
DAY 4 – Mt. Bartle Frere Eastern Summit Camp to Gourka Road
We are woken by a spectacular sunrise and enjoy breakfast before striking camp and getting on our way for the 1.5 hour walk to the South Peak which also marks the 1,622m summit of Mt. Bartle Frere. We have reached the top of the highest mountain in Queensland – well done. After a tea break we drop into a small valley which marks the headwaters of the Russell River and we continue upward to South West Peak with the chance of seeing the Golden Bowerbird and its intricate bower. We then descend 700m through beautiful upland rainforest, stopping for a break and swim at the lovely Bobbin Bobbin Falls before we reach our TAG transfer at the takeout point at Gourka Road.
