Lappa Rail Trail 3-Day Savannah Cycle

Goodbye civilisation, hello to superb views over rugged ranges, outback creeks and starry nights.  Join TAG’s 3 day fully supported savannah mountain biking experience, 145 kilometres of dirt road cycling including the historic Lappa Rail Trail and comfortable camping.

For this bike journey, expect a mixture of easy to challenging riding, to stop regularly along the way and to allow the group to reform, to be supported by a vehicle that gives reassurance and flexibility whilst not interfering with our quiet, vast outback experience, and camping in a different location each night. All gear is provided and you’ll be led by your local guide who has a keen eye for spotting wildlife and historical points of interest along the way.

day 1

Bike Herberton to Woodleigh Station

An early courtesy shuttle from Cairns takes us to the historic mining town of Herberton, where the cycling begins.  Today’s ride is predominantly on undulating country gravel road down Silver Valley.  We pass through open, dry eucalypt country skirting the scenic Wild River in the afternoon.  We have time to explore an authentic Aboriginal ochre rock art site, and ride by billabongs, dry river beds and old mine sites.  Ride up to 45km over the day, then arrive at Woodleigh Station - a five generation family-owned, authentic Queensland cattle station, on the banks of the Millstream Creek.  Take a swim, then return to a country style meal, laughs, star gazing and good company and a warm shower before turning in for the night.

day 2

Bike to Frankie’s Camp via Lappa Junction

An early start to the dawn chorus, allows us to breakfast and strike camp before the 20km transfer to the start of the Lappa Rail Trail, via Mount Garnet, the starting point of today’s ride.  The original railway line was privately built in 1902, taken over by the Queensland Railways in 1914 and closed in 1960.  Today the Lappa Rail Trail with its savannah backdrop has many appealing features for bike riding, including: the gentle undulating and meandering qualities, long distant views into the valleys, stark ranges, remnants of the former railway line including old stone bridges, narrow rock cuttings and minimal vehicle traffic.  We take smoko on the golden sandy banks of the ephemeral California Creek and a late lunch at Lappa Junction, which marks the end of the rail trail.  Take a peek inside the Espanol Hotel, built in 1906, now a quaint and quirky museum - talk to the ghosts of our pioneer past.  Then you have the option of taking a shuttle or riding the next 20km down to our overnight rustic bush campsite at Frankie’s Camp on the beautiful, paperbark-fringed Emu Creek. Ride up to 35, or to 55km, depending on your needs.  The late afternoon is spent resting and swimming before the evening meal around a camp fire, a glass of red for those who’d like one and a good night’s sleep.

day 3

Bike to Irvinebank (historic mining village)

You awake to a hot mug of a ‘brew of choice’ before starting the day with a splash in Emu Creek and breakfast.  Not far from our camp sits an imposing rock stack, stunning in colour and shape and providing ideal habitat for the shy, endemic Mareeba Rock Wallaby.  Here we take a moment to try our luck in spotting one of these delightful creatures.  Ride on a dirt road which winds its way along Emu Creek, across fords, through cattle country and beautiful eucalypt timbered ranges.  This was part of the original coach track and we take time for historic interpretation, smoko, lunch and snack breaks.  Our destination for the day is the charming, heritage listed mining village of Irvinebank.  We enjoy a well deserved drink at the local (if it’s open) before the transfer back to Cairns.

“Fantastic Lappa Ride”
6 of us joined Peter, Trixie and Matt on an unforgettable Australian outback cycle experience during September. From the minute we arrived we felt cared for and our hosts went out of their way to ensure our bikes were adjusted to our needs. We spent three days in the outback but we were treated like royalty. The food and treats along the way was amazing. Thanx so much Trixie! The TAG team has an amazing knowledge of the flora and fauna which added so much value to this trip. The ride is challenging but we always felt safe as our hosts always puts safety first. We can recommend this trip and we will not hesitate to return and do it again with the best hosts imaginable. Thanks Peter, Trixie and Matt for a trip and experience we will never forget.
