Tropical Trails 3-Day Bike Park Jaunt

Join TAG on Tropical North Queensland’s exclusive ‘trio’ mountain bike park experience.  Ride up to 100 kilometres of purpose built, world class single track mountain bike trails over three epic days!  Including the iconic rainforest trail destination - Smithfield!

day 1

Davies Creek Mountain Bike Park

An early courtesy shuttle from Cairns or Atherton takes us to Davies Creek Mountain Bike Park, adjacent to Davies Creek National Park in the Mareeba Shire.  After a refreshing drink we get you comfortable on your bike for a ride up to 25 kilometres (7 trails) of single track.  Mareeba is renowned for it’s 300 sunny days a year, over millennia this has shaped the rock and gravel rich sun-kissed landscape of the trails.  The Davies Creek area features granite outcrops, seasonal creeks and forests of bloodwoods, stringybarks, she-oaks, cycads and grass trees.  A great network of flowing trails winds along slopes shadowed by the Lamb Range in the distance, lengths and grades suitable for all riders.

Finish by riding to Bunda Bibandji - two ochre rock art galleries of the Djabugay Aboriginal people.  This is an engaging place and a chance to connect with country.  Here we take to the cool shade and eat a well deserved lunch, followed by a refreshing swim in Davies Creek.  The day ends with a transfer to Woodlands Tourist Park in Atherton where we’ll camp for the next two nights.  This peaceful, green Tourist Park features a bike wash bay, great showers and a swimming pool.  Head into town for dinner and to experience Atherton’s nightlife at the local pubs (choice of three).

day 2

Atherton Forest Mountain Bike Park

Today is a full day out to ride the epic trails of Atherton Forest Mountain Bike Park.  This network of purpose-built, single-track mountain bike trails is located in the Herberton Range State Forest. There is a whopping 54.4 kilometre total network of 17 trails with grades easy, intermediate and some sections including black (difficult).  Trails meander through an open forest of gums, bloodwoods, mahoganys, she-oaks, grasstrees and cycads and some of the trails pass former forestry experimental plots of teak, blackbutt and tallowwood trees.
Choose your own adventure and ride the trails self-guided to your level of skill and ability or join a group ride with your guide which will feature a range of what the park has to offer.  Return to the vehicle at the trail head for breaks and lunch at your leisure.  Remember to allow some time for the well-designed mountain bike skills park, located at the Atherton Forest Mountain Bike Park Trailhead.  Ride hard until the sun goes down or for those seeking a more relaxed afternoon, take spin on the local Rail Trail and take in the sights of Atherton and surrounds.  Enjoy a barbeque on us back at the Woodlands Tourist Park.

day 3

Smithfield Mountain Bike Park

We indulge in a lazy start with a nourishing breakfast before breaking camp. Transfer to Cairns for a 3-4 hour adventure at Smithfield Mountain Bike Park - get excited to ride on the trails in the oldest mountain bike park in Australia.  Smithfield has a rich mountain biking history of innovative trail building and world class events since the 1990’s.  Enjoy climbs and descents on trails sculpted out of volcanic clay that twist their way through magnificent vine-wrapped jungles, with an equal spread of easy, intermediate and difficult sections.  As many of these trails hug the jagged ridges overlooking the Great Barrier Reef, it’s no wonder these trails have names like Wobbegong, Black Snake and Blue Marlin.  Our mountain biking jaunt ends with a farewell lunch and shuttle back to Cairns / Cairns Airport by 4pm.

✧ Grade: challenging
✧ Meals: breakfast and lunch.

“Great trails & service”
I spent a really pleasant afternoon riding in the Atherton Forest Mountain Bike Park. Thanks to Peter for setting me up with the perfect bike (Giant Trance 27.5) and good advice on what to ride. I’d recommend these trails to any mountain biker travelling through the Tablelands - the up trails are nicely designed, the down parts are flowy and fun, they are well maintained, and you can ride them from town. Arranging and getting the bike was easy and it was well set up with all the necessary safety and trail repair equipment supplied. Thanks Peter!
